The Woodcarver Review & Giveaway

We have had a really busy week on the farm this week. For several days we were jumping from one vehicle to the next. 

On Thursday, I took the prince and princess to the museum to for the princess' birthday. We came home and talked to Prince Charming for a minute before deciding that we needed to try to gather some cattle for market before turning the herd into a bigger pasture. We loaded up and headed off. After catching them, we decided that it was best to go ahead and deliver them to the market for sale the next day. The market is an hour away and that put us getting home at bedtime. 

On Friday, we awoke early to deliver beef to a new restaurant customer in the big city. That was another hour-long trip (one way). Upon returning to the farm, the kids and I jumped in the "grocery getter" and ran errands. I'm not even sure what happened Friday afternoon. 

On Saturday, we started our Spring Cleaning on the farm. The weather has been unseasonably warm and we wanted to be a part of the out-of-doors. All of the things that were blown around or carried and dropped throughout the winter were put in their proper places. We unearthed our butterfly garden that was over taken by weeds. We still have work to do there, but were pleasantly surprised to see that we had plants being resurrected.

This evening, I was delighted to have the opportunity to watch The Woodcarver with the prince. (The princess was there too, but was more involved with her own play.) We were delighted by what we saw. It was such a heartwarming story of a family that had lost their way from each other and from God. They are paired with a widow man who has also lost his faith, but is the one who can help this family heal.

About the Movie from the publisher:
Matthew Stevenson is a troubled kid from a broken home. When he vandalizes the local church to get back at his parents, Matthew has to repair the damage to the church to avoid criminal charges. While working at the church, he meets Ernest (John Ratzenberger), an accomplished wood carver who created the intricate woodwork decoration that Matthew destroyed. Ernest has become something of a hermit, but reluctantly comes out of reclusion to help repair the church. Now Ernest and Matthew must work together to preserve the church's beautiful antiquity, and along the way, they also manage to restore their faith in God and in life.

The Mighty Macs Review and Giveaway

With some of the other reviews that I've done, I've seen some previews for movies that I thought would be fun to see and/or review. The Mighty Macs is just one of those movies, and it did not disappoint. 


About the Movie:

It's 1971. Cathy Rush is a woman ahead of her time ... and she's about to embark on an adventure for the ages. A new era is dawning in the country and in collegiate athletics, where a national champion will be crowned for the first time in women's basketball.

In the lead up to this historical season, major universities are preparing their game plans to win that first title. Meanwhile a tiny all-women's Catholic college in Philadelphia has a more modest goal: find a coach before the season begins. Providentially, Cathy Rush is about to find Immaculata College.

Recently married, Cathy is dealing with the aftermath of a truncated playing career. While cultural norms would have her staying at home, she's willing to do the hard work necessary to help her new team reach their goals—or perhaps she's just trying to achieve her unfulfilled dreams through them.

From the beginning, her challenges are as imposing as the big-school teams Immaculata will face on the court. Cathy learns there is no gymnasium on campus, she receives little support from the school's Mother Superior, and the school is in dire financial straits. To top it off, she may not even have enough players to field a team!

While it appears the Macs don't have a prayer, all hope is not lost. With the help of Sister Sunday—a spunky assistant coach—and the support of a booster club of elderly nuns, Coach Rush creates a new game plan that just might bring the team—and the school—together.

Will this pioneer buck cultural norms and spur her rag-tag team to unexpected heights? Or will her hard-driving ways create a wedge between the coach and everyone around her? One thing's for certain: there's never been anyone like Cathy Rush at Immaculata!

A Mile In His Shoes Review & Giveaway

I really enjoyed The Christmas Lodge movie. So, when I got the chance to review another of Thomas Kinkade's presentations, I gladly accepted. 


A Mile In His Shoes is based on the true story of Mickey Tussler (played by cutie patootie Luke Schroder, look-alike son of Ricky Schroder). Mickey is an 18-year-old farm boy with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. Minor League coach Arthur Murphy (played by cutie-patootie Dean Cain), discovers Mickey's pitching ability by accident. 


Coach Murphy convinces Mickey's parents to let Mickey try out for the team. The team is transformed ... not only with their game, but their spirit as well. Mickey's growth as a player and as an individual is only a small part of the changes in the other characters throughout the movie.


This was Luke Schroder's first big roll in his acting career. I thought he did a marvelous job and was convincing in his roll. I found myself on the verge of tears for several scenes. In the whole movie, I found one word that could be seen as objectionable. One scene could be viewed as intense for younger children. 


Overall, the movie was wonderful. It gives a gentle introduction to autism and shows it in a favorable light. While Mickey had some issues to overcome, he wasn't limited by them.

Cooper and Me Review and Giveaway

One thing about being a homeschool mom is that your children are with you all the time. There isn't much chance that they will get lost on the way to school. But what about in the grocery store or an on outing with friends? I've never talked very much to my children about what to do if you get lost ... until recently.


We had the opportunity to review Cooper and Me and the Winter Adventure. This was an adorable story written by Monique & Alexa Peters. Written in rhyming verse, the story features two dogs who go on a sledding adventure. They get caught in a snowstorm and fear that they won't make it home before dark. Through their adventure, the reader learns what you should do BEFORE going on an outing and what to do if you run into trouble. At the end of the story, there is an opportunity for discussion of the story and how it applies to our lives.

Christmas Lodge Review & Giveaway

This giveaway is closed. 


Do you know much about Thomas Kinkade's art? He is often called "The Painter of Light." 


Now, Thomas Kinkade has entered the movie world with a presentation of Christmas Lodge. I read this synopsis on the back of the box:


During a weekend trip to the mountains, Mary (Erin Karpluk) finds herself at the now-dilapidated lodge where she spent the holidays with her family growing up. She becomes determined to restore the building to its former glory. Inspired by her grandfather and guided by her grandmother in heaven, Mary throws herself into the project, and during the process finds herself drawn to Jack (Michael Shanks), a handsome man who loves the lodge as much as she does. Historically unlucky in love, this chance encounter allows Mary to renew her faith in life and discover her one true love. For an uplifting story about the importance of faith, family and the true holiday spirit, go to the Christmas Lodge.


Anytime, I see "discover her one true love" in a movie or book description I tell myself that I have to watch it without the children ... and Prince Charming probably won't like it. So, I waited for Prince Charming to be out for the evening and watched the movie by myself. Boy, was I surprised!! The G rating actually fit this film!

  • In the beginning, Mary and her boyfriend are going to the mountains for the weekend. They clearly get separate rooms.
  • When they break up, it is not for some dramatic reason and there isn't a big fight about it.
  • There is only one romantic kiss in the whole movie and it is appropriately timed. 
  • There are no "bedroom scenes."
  • It is a movie about love, faith, tradition and family. There is much multi-generational respect ... Mary for her father and grandparents, Jack calls Mary's father and grandfather, "Sir", and Mary's father concedes to his father's request. 

I really liked this movie. Some of it was predicable, but very heart-warming. You can watch the trailer here.


The prince is sitting by me as I'm writing this. He saw the DVD case and wanted to know about it. I told him that I had to watch it first and see if it was o.k. for kids. Then, he asked if it was o.k. to watch. I think we now have a plan for this evening.

Carlito C. Caterpillars's MathHouse Game Card Review & Giveaway

Learning Math has been a challenge in the palace. I have finally learned that the prince is a right-brained learner and doesn't learn in the traditional ways. He needs hands-on activities instead of just rote memorization. The princess learns mostly by osmosis, but enjoys games as well. Anytime that we can disguise school as play, we jump at the chance.

The Shunning -- Review & Giveaway

Back when I did a review of The Grace Card, I mentioned how much I enjoyed the previews that were shown with that movie. One of those was The Shunning. So, when I got the chance to review it, I jumped at the chance. 


The Shunning, by Beverly Lewis, is a wonderful glimpse into the lives of the Amish. The tight-knit community is protective of their neighbors. When a big-city woman comes poking around, they are reluctant to reveal the home of the lady she is looking for. One older lady in the order helps her make the connection and so begins the story.


More about the movie:
Before she succumbs to cancer, the dying wish of Laura Mayfield-Bennett is to be reunited with the daughter she never knew. Unfortunately, that daughter, Katie Lapp, is a member of the Amish order. Katie is about to be married, but uneasy about the path ahead.  Now she discovers the secret her parents have kept from her: she's adopted. 
The movie is based on the first novel in "The Heritage of Lancaster County" the series by Beverly Lewis.


I really enjoyed this movie. The drama kept you tuned in to see what happens next. Katie Lapp is already struggling with the rules that define her community. The return of her birth mother after 20 years really adds to that conflict.

The Grace Card -- Review & Giveaway

Grace: It is such a little word, but it carries BIG meanings. Is your heart BIG enough for grace?

Have you ever thought about the word grace?

  • favor
  • goodwill
  • kindness
  • kindliness
  • love
  • forgiveness
  • charity
  • mercifulness
  • mercy
  • clemency
  • pardon
Those are more BIG words that require thought as to their meaning. Sometimes the meanings are easy to get. It is the application of those meanings that can sometimes be hard to deal with.

Would you be able to apply those words if you watched your small child be killed by someone's illegal activity? Would you be able to immediately offer grace to that person? Would you be able to offer grace to that person after a matter of time? Or would you be more likely to have the opposite of grace ...  animosity and disfavor? Would you carry that emotion over to all people of the race of the one who killed your child? Would you be able to work with a person of that race ... as if YOUR life depended on it?

That is exactly what happened to Mac McDonald in The Grace Card. His small son was killed as a drug dealer tried to elude capture. His reaction to that tragic event shaped the next 17 years of his life. His relationship with his wife, surviving child, co-workers, and God were all impacted by that event. 

As a police officer, he was partenered with a man of a different race who had just received a promotion ... the promotion that Mac wanted. This wasn't just any man. He was a man of faith; a man who struggled to build a church; and after this partnership ... a man who struggled with grace himself. The two men were partenered to work on one man's attitude. The partnership worked on both men's hearts.

This movie came out several months ago. A friend at our church recommended it to the entire congregation. I wasn't able to go when our Bible Study group went. So, I jumped at the opportunity to review it in DVD format. I am so glad I did. I watched it the other night with my mom and we both loved it. (We even loved the previews on the DVD for the other films!)

At the beginning of the film, I thought the acting was kind of poor. But it soon got better and the story picked up quickly. There was only one thing that I would change ... Louis Gossett, Jr. I really enjoy his films, but we didn't see much of him in this movie. He only had a few minutes of screen time, but it was a pivotal few minutes.

The Crossmaker DVD -- A Review & GIVEAWAY

See the Light artist Heidi Shorts teaches creative lettering, Master Teacher Pat Knepley leads a step-by-step drawing lesson using chalk pastels, and Jim Pence give a tutorial in water colors. All of these lessons include florescent elements. The black light reveals are awesome!


After watching these videos, the prince and I went back to our math lesson. I could see the princess writing and she was speaking very softly. When I looked closer, I realized she was drawing the Jim Pence lesson and was "teaching" as she worked.

CSN Stores Giveaway

Well, I'm finally back to give you the sequel to my Shopping, Shopping, Shopping post. I finally decided to purchase a Hamilton Beach 4-quart crockpot. I had a 6-quart, but thought the smaller one would work better for certain dishes and certain occasions.


I ordered the crockpot on a Monday and had it by Thursday of the same week. I put it into use that weekend. I've used it several times since then and am very happy with it. It is just the right size to feed our family and not have too many leftovers. I also love the little gasket around the lid. Some dishes like to sputter as they cook and this prevents that. Oh, and it has clamps to hold the lid on if you want to transport the crockpot. It only has low, high, and keep warm settings. There is not an automatic timer, but I'm usually around to turn it down or off. 


I'm still cruising around the CSN Stores sites to see what else I like. Right now, I have my eye on one of these upholstered headboards.  I think that leather is a great decorating accessory for The Cow Queen.
